The Empty Spaces by Sarah Churchill
Sarah, Lady Audley, the second daughter of the late Sir Winston Churchill, has been writing poetry since her childhood, but The Empty Spaces is the first occasion her work has been presented in book form. This collection consists of more than sixty poignant poems, each an evocative recollection from a life that has known sadness - more sadness, perhaps, than most.
It includes lines written in her 'teens, childhood memories of the magic of the seashore, an early recollection of tea at the Ritz, a war-time memento called ACW2 to Pilot Officer, a quintet of poems in memory of her husband, Lord (Henry) Audley, and a moving tribute addressed to her father, 'WSC, entitled The Last Farewell.
The title, The Empty Spaces, derives from the philosophy of the Chinese work, the Tao Te Ching, which teaches an extreme, compassionate 'Just as we take advantage of what is, we should recognise the utility of what is not.'
Lady Audley dedicates this volume to her elder sister, Diana, who died in 1963.
